Wooster Scores Six-Straight Goals to Shock Allegheny 14-11 in OT

Trailing 8-11 with less than two minutes remaining in regulation, The College of Wooster women's lacrosse team scored three-consecutive goals to push the game to overtime, and then Becca Worthington stunned Allegheny College by scoring three more times in the extra periods to lead the Fighting Scots to a 14-11 comeback victory at Meadville, Pa.

The Gators (3-4, 1-1 NCAC) appeared to have the game wrapped up when Christina Zanic scored to put them up 11-8 with 5:20 to go, but the Scots (3-2, 1-0 NCAC) mounted an unexpected comeback. Katie Smart scored with 1:51 remaining on the clock, and then Madison Carey made good on a free-position shot to draw Wooster within one goal (10-11) with under a minute to play. The Scots then won the ensuing draw control and raced towards the goal, where Becca Worthington beat the keeper to tie the game 11-11.

Allegheny had an opportunity to win the game with 10 seconds remaining in regulation, but its free-position shot attempt hit the post, causing a skirmish to take place that allowed the clock to expire and push overtime.

In the extra periods it was all Wooster, as Worthington scored a free-position goal in the first OT period, and then added two more in the second, to seal a 14-11 Scots' win. Worthington finished the game with seven goals, a career-high, and just one shy of the school record.

Early in the second half, Allegheny turned a 5-5 tie into a 9-5 cushion by scoring four unanswered goal in less than three minutes. Wooster called a timeout, and then responded with two quick goals of its own by Clare Nelson-Johnson and Nina Dine to cut the defecit to 7-9. From that moment on, the Scots went on a 7-2 scoring run to close out the game, including the tilt's final six goals.

Joining Worthington in the scoring column was Dine, who scored twice and added three assists, while Carey also recorded two goals to go along with one helper. Smart and Johnson rounded out Wooster's offensive leaders with one goal apiece.

The Gators had three players, Jensen Peterson, Meg Grossman, and Zanic, notch hat tricks in the setback. Goalkeeper Rebecca O'Shurak made 14 saves in a losing effort, while Wooster's Shawn Ferris made eight saves while recording her second-consecutive win.

The Scots will look to carry this momentum into the weekend when they host North Coast Athletic Conference challenger DenisonDenison University (3-2, 0-0 NCAC) on Saturday at 1 p.m.
