Wooster Overcomes Slow Start to Oust Wittenberg 11-8

The College of Wooster women's lacrosse team trailed WittenbergWittenberg University by three goals in the early goings, but a 7-2 scoring run to close out the game pushed the Scots past their archrival 11-8 on Saturday in a North Coast Athletic Conference tilt at Springfield, Ohio.

Just two minutes into the action, Madison Carey scored an unassisted goal that gave Wooster (9-2, 4-0 NCAC) a quick 1-0 lead, but Wittenberg's (8-5, 2-3 NCAC) Erin Guiliano answered back with a goal that sparked a sudden Tiger scoring run. Wittenberg led 4-1 about 10 minutes into in the opening stanza, until Becca Worthington and Amy Denny each beat the keeper to draw Wooster within one (4-3).

Wittenberg led 6-4 with nine minutes remaining in the half, but a Worthington goal on an Isabel Baylor assist, and a Nina Dine free-position score tied the game 6-6 heading into the break.

The Tigers opened the second with a Jessica Mead goal to take the lead (7-6) once again, but from that moment on it was all Wooster. The Scots went on their own four-goal run during a six minute span that included Dine, Worthington, and Carey's third goals, and Wooster jumped out to a 10-7 advantage. Shawna Ferris sealed the win, as she made seven saves in the second half, and allowed Wittenberg just one score over the final 28 minutes of action.

Dine, Worthington, and Carey led Wooster with three goals each. Ferris recorded 12 saves, her third double-digit save total this season, and also notched Wooster's eighth-consecutive win in goal.

The Scots will look to continue their success in NCAC action on Tuesday when they host OberlinOberlin College (3-9, 0-4 NCAC) at 4:30 p.m.
