Lightning Forces 14-14 Tie Between Wooster, Berry

Sophia Hoover Grant's goal with 3:01 remaining in regulation knotted The College of Wooster and Berry College at 14-14, but moments later, lightning in the area caused a 90-minute delay, and the game was eventually called, resulting in a rare tie Wednesday evening in a non-conference women's lacrosse match-up at Rome, Ga.

The Scots (4-1-1) trailed 13-11 late in the second half, when Clare Nelson-Johnson and Madison Carey scored goals just 19 seconds apart to tie the game. Shortly after, the Vikings (4-4-1) responded to take a 14-13 lead, but with 3:01 left on the clock, Hoover Grant netted the equalizer on Jaqueline Wallat's fourth assist, tying the score for the seventh time of the day at 14-14.

Berry was victorious on the ensuing draw, but Isabel Baylor caused one of her game-high four turnovers to give the Scots a chance to come down and net the game-winner. It was at the juncture when lightning was spotted, which forced a lengthy delay, proceed by an official decision to end the game in a tie. It marked the first time Wooster was involved in a tie game since the 1983 season.

The Vikings accounted for the game's initial three goals (3-0), only to have the Scots score the next five in a row to take a 5-3 lead. It was then Berry's turn to make a run, as it ended the half with four straight goals, including one just 0:04 seconds before the horn, which left Wooster trailing by two scores at the half (7-5).

Carey and Eliza Perry netted the first two goals of the second half to knot the score at 7-7, and then the two teams continued to go goal-for-goal, with neither school leading by more than two scores at any point in the stanza.

Statistically, Wallat led Wooster with six points (2 goals, 4 assists), and also added two draw controls. Carey was next in line with three goals and two assists, while Nelson-Johnson also recorded a hat trick, and added five draw controls, four groundballs, and three caused turnovers.

Also noteworthy, Cassie Greenbaum totaled five draw controls, and Shelby Stone scooped up four groundballs. In goal, Shawna Ferris made nine saves.

Next up, the Scots will play their first home game of the season when they host Fredonia State University on Sunday at 1 p.m.
