WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster turned a closely-contested game into comfortable victory with a six-goal spurt in the second half that pushed it past Washington & Jefferson College 13-8 in the Scots' home opener Thursday at John P. Papp Stadium.

The Scots (1-1) led on the scoreboard the entire first half, but the Presidents (2-2) remained within reach, and eventually closed the gap with a goal right out of the halftime break that tied the game 6-6.

It was at that juncture when the Scots picked up the pace offensively, as Ellie Hudson-Heck scored on a feed from Alison Schlothauer that sparked a game-changing scoring run. Just 14 seconds later, Clare Nelson-Johnson scored on a free-position shot, and then over the next 13:15, the Scots added another four goals, including two more from Hudson-Heck, and one each from Nelson-Johnson and Eliza Perry that made it a 12-6 game.

The Presidents snapped their scoring-drought with their fifth free-position goal of the contest, but Molly Sennett added an insurance goal late in the contest, and Wooster went onto a 13-8 win.

Newcomer Hudson-Heck broke out with a team-high five goals and four groundballs, while Nelson-Johnson added a hat trick, and Perry recorded two goals and three assists.

Schlothauer led the team with three draw controls to go along with her assist, and Sennett caused three turnovers. Goalkeeper Shawna Ferris made six saves, with four coming in the second half.

The Presidents' Kelsey Kraus scored five of the teams' eight goals, with three coming on free-position shots.

Wooster will be back home Saturday when it hosts Thiel College (2-5) at 2 p.m.
