WOOSTER, Ohio - Senior Abby Szlachta had four quick goals out of the gate and The College of Wooster women's lacrosse team never looked back in a 17-11 over NCAA Div. II Walsh University on Thursday afternoon at John P. Papp Stadium.

Szlachta, who scored all of her game-high four goals in the first 10 minutes and change, put the Fighting Scots (1-0) on the board at the 27:47 mark of the first half via a free-position shot. Just over a minute later, the attacker broke loose again and connected on the feed from classmate Heather Honn. She went on to finish on an assist from senior Jamie Wren-Jarvis at the 20:35 mark, and put home a second free-position goal with 19:57 left in the frame.

Senior Abby Szlachta scored four times in the opening 10:03 of the season lid-lifter.

Wooster opened up a 4-0 lead at the 23:21 mark when goals from junior Heather Szymanski and senior Ellie Hudson-Heck backed up Szlachta's hot start.

Walsh, who used the competition as an exhibition contest due to being a Div. II institution, got on the board via an Aly Jajack goal at the 21:52 mark.

The Cavilers climbed back into the game with a three-goal swing late in the first half, including at one point cutting the Scots lead to three at 9-6 with 2:05 remaining.

Honn bumped the lead up to four at the half, connecting with 22 ticks left in the opening frame.

Wooster found success on free-position shots in the second half, as the Scots finished on the eight-meter try five times, including three straight by first-years Emma Lawrence and Jordan Stone, and sophomore Michaela Lawrence.

The Scots, who led by as many as nine, also had a three-goal contribution from Michaela Lawrence.

Senior Isabel Perman added 10 saves in goal, while sophomore Mara Sheban had a game-high eight groundballs. Emma Lawrence turned in a strong debut lacrosse game with eight draw controls.

Of note, both teams finished with the same number of shots as they had groundballs, with Wooster holding a 35-26 edge in both statistical categories. The Scots also held the Cavilers to 14-of-27 on clear attempts while turning in a 16-for-21 mark on their own clears.

Maria Nobile led Walsh with three goals.

Wooster remains at home to take on Sewanee, The University of the South (3-2) at noon on Sunday.
