Schuster's Game Winner in OT Gives Scots Win in Season Opener

Junior Sydney Schuster gave The College of Wooster women's lacrosse team the win in their season opener on Sunday after scoring in overtime to defeat Transylvania University 15-14.

Schuster received a pass from first-year Hannah Shaw and made a move towards the net from the right side before cutting to the middle and scoring off a backhand. She scored with 22 seconds remaining in the first three-minute section of overtime.

Wooster had to battle back after trailing 7-5 at halftime and at most five with 22:17 left in the game.

Transylvania started to play conservatively after scoring four of the first five goals of the second half, but Wooster used that passiveness to score seven unanswered goals to take a 13-11 lead with 7:45 remaining.

Ashley Boersma started and ended the scoring run as five other Scots tallied a goal in that frame including Caitlyn O'Connor, Shaw, Alexa MellisKatie Harvey and Schuster.

Shaw helped the Scots get out of their scoring drought as the first-year was entered on the draw where she ended up getting a team-high seven draw controls. 

The two teams then traded goals to make it 14-12, but Transylvania was able to answer with two goals in the final five minutes to force overtime.

In the first half, Wooster held a 5-3 lead after the first 20 minutes. However, the Pioneers scored four goals in the final 10 minutes to take the 7-5 lead at halftime.

Schuster, Boersma and Jenny Grossmann led the Scots with three goals each. Junior Miura Wiley had two goals, including the game's first within the first minute of play.

Grossmann added a team-high four assists and four ground balls. Salem Carlow and Rachel Johnston led Transylvania with four goals each.

Junior Katie Shideler got the win in net. She collected 15 saves.

Wooster was 17-of-25 in clear attempts. They connected on 40 percent (4-of-10) of their free position shot opportunities and took one more draw control than the Pioneers at 16.

Both teams took 35 shots.

Transylvania drops to 2-1, while Wooster moves to 1-0 on the year. The Scots host John Carroll University on Saturday.
