BEREA, Ohio – Junior Alexa Mellis scored seven goals – one shy of The College of Wooster women's lacrosse single-game record – and the Fighting Scots picked up their 14th straight non-conference win with a 20-15 victory at Baldwin Wallace University on Tuesday evening.

Mellis netted her second goal of the night at the 10:24 mark of the first half, and that score was significant for a couple of reasons. First, it tied the game at four, as Baldwin Wallace's (2-1) Brie Martineau gave Wooster's (2-0) defense an early test with three goals in the first 8:45. Additionally, it marked the opening goal of Wooster's 8-1 stretch, that saw the Scots take command of the contest. Mellis capped the stretch with 2:29 to go in the first half, when she finished a feed from senior Jenny Grossmann. That goal upped Wooster's lead to 11-5, with the six-goal edge ranking as the co-game-high.

Baldwin Wallace pulled within three or four at four different junctions, and each time Wooster had a relatively quick counter. Alexis O'Neill trimmed Wooster's lead to 11-7 at halftime, only to see Mellis and first-year Hannah Shaw convert on free-position attempts in the first three minutes of the second half. Later, three straight Baldwin Wallace goals tightened the score to 13-10 before junior Ashley Boersma found Mellis and then junior Caitlyn O'Connor for two Wooster goals in a 19-second span.

Later, Katie Harvey found the back on the net for consecutive goals, and the junior capped the night's scoring with a free-position goal in the final minute.

Prior to Harvey putting the contest out of reach, junior Lauryn Hill scooped up a key groundball with about 3:46 to go, and the Scots kept possession while protecting a then-four-goal lead until about 2:52 was left on the second-half clock.

Mellis' seven scores were backed up by Harvey's four and Grossmann's three. Boersma logged a five-point night with a game-high three assists and two goals.

Grossmann tallied the high marks in groundballs (5) and caused turnovers (2), while Shaw's six draw controls were tops amongst the Scots. Junior Katie Shideler logged 10 saves en route to recording her 28th win in goal.

Martineau scored six goals, and Hannah Stein's game-leading 13 draw controls stood out about Baldwin Wallace's individual stats.

Baldwin Wallace finished with a 33-32 edge on shots, a 21-16 advantage on draw controls, and won the groundball battle 24-19. The Scots were an impressive 7-for-9 on free-position shots.

Next, Wooster hosts John Carroll University (2-1) at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 7.
