WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster women's lacrosse team's non-conference winning streak, which spanned nearly two full calendar years, came to a close on Saturday afternoon, as visiting John Carroll University pulled away from the Fighting Scots 21-10 at John P. Papp Stadium.

Wooster (2-1), which last lost a non-conference game at Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on March 15, 2018, started strong, with junior Ashley Boersma's free-position goal marking the first score of the game. John Carroll (4-1) responded with a 5-0 run, with two goals coming from first-year Mary Doherty.

The transition game proved to have a major impact on the outcome of Saturday's contest. John Carroll was 19-of-22 on clear attempts compared to just a 14-of-28 mark for Wooster. Those turnovers in transition led to a big shot disparity as well, a stat the Blue Streaks dominated 43-23.

One area where Wooster did find some success on Saturday was following up on initial shot attempts. In the first half, junior Sydney Schuster's shot with 1:38 remaining was turned aside by John Carroll's Maddie Munding. The rebound caromed to junior Caitlyn O'Connor, who scooped up the ground ball, and easily deposited her third goal of the season into the net. In the second half, Munding stopped O'Connor's shot with about 23 minutes remaining. This time, junior Alexa Mellis scooped and scored.

John Carroll's 6-1 run that opened the second half essentially put the game out of reach. Wooster did have a 3-1 stretch in the second period that was headlined by two goals from junior Katie Harvey.

Harvey's three goals led the way for Wooster, while Boersma and O'Connor each had two. Harvey and O'Connor had four groundballs each, while Harvey's five draw controls was the team high. Junior Katie Shideler turned aside 14 shots.

Colleen Grombala netted a game-high five goals and passed out four assists. Molly Carroll scooped up 15 groundballs and had four caused turnovers, while Doherty logged a co-game-leading five draw controls.

Next, Wooster's at Ursinus College for a 4 p.m. game on Tuesday, March 10.
