Senior Salute: Katie Harvey

Katie Harvey sidebar

Throughout the spring and summer, we'll be honoring our senior student-athletes with a "Senior Salute" series. Today's featured senior is Katie Harvey, a global and international studies major from Ellicott City, Maryland. Harvey is a member of the women's lacrosse team.

Q: Why did you choose to attend The College of Wooster?
A: As a prospective student, I was really impressed with the way that Wooster uniquely combines a multi-faceted liberal arts education and a research education through Independent Study. I knew that I would be able to explore a variety of academic subjects and delve into the ones I find most interesting. This great education, plus the ability to be involved in athletics and other extracurriculars on campus, definitely made my decision easy.

Q: What does it mean to you to be a Fighting Scot student-athlete?
A: Being a student-athlete has allowed me to continue playing a sport I love, meet some rad new people, and make countless memories. It's been a great part of my college experience.

Q: What are some of your favorite memories as a student at The College of Wooster?
A: No huge event sticks out, but rather the little traditions that I've adopted during my time at Wooster. I love having lunch with my pals at Knowlton Café on Wednesday, having Sunday breakfast at Farmer Boy, being on aux (in control of the music) in the locker room before lacrosse games, or listening to our student bluegrass band play on Sunday nights in the Kauke Arch. It's all these little things that've made Wooster so special.

Q: What's the best part about being a student-athlete at The College of Wooster?
A: I know that I've got a group of passionate, dedicated people behind me at all times. Whether it's our athletic trainers, coaching staff, hourly Scot Center staff, professors, and fans, Wooster student-athletes have a great support system.

Q: What else were you involved with on campus besides your sport?
A: Besides lacrosse, I am Wooster field hockey's number one fan and an avid intramural floor hockey and volleyball player. I'm a Lead Tour Guide in the Office of Admissions, so you'll find me giving tours of campus a lot. Shoutout to my fantastic counterpart and pole vaulter Georgia Hopps-Weber! Finally, I've loved getting to know the WOODS camping/hiking group this year!

Q: Which College of Wooster faculty or staff member has made the greatest impact on you and why?
A: With a smile and plenty of corny jokes, Dr. Matt Krain encouraged me to turn my fascination with international relations into a course of study. I really cannot thank him enough for sharing his passion of international relations with me throughout my time at Wooster.

Q: What other people or resources impacted your Wooster experience in a positive way and how did these people/resources set you up to be successful at Wooster?
A: I'd also like to thank a few of my personal mentors. Dr. Brooke Krause in the economics department has inspired me with her intelligence and resilience. Melanie Schultz in the Office of Admissions has always believed in me and has been a constantly positive force. Finally, Coach Elizabeth Ford has continually pushed me to be a better version of myself on and off the field.

Q: Tell us a bit about your Independent Study project?
A: My Independent Study is looking at the intersection of businesses and political environmental regulation. I'm interested in if and how the profit-seeking tendencies of multinational corporations influence how impactful international environmental institutions and treaties are at solving environmental issues.

Q: Tell us a bit about something cool you did as a student at The College of Wooster?
A: One of the highlights of my college experience was spending the fall of 2019 in Copenhagen, Denmark. My school courses focused on promoting sustainability in urban design and actually prompted me to add an environmental studies minor here at Wooster. When I was not in the classroom, I got to do quite a bit of adventuring around Europe. I practiced with the Danish women's lacrosse team, camped in Northern Denmark, explored caves in Slovenia, dog sledded in Norway, and sat front row at a Leicester City football match in England!

Q: Reflecting back on your time at Wooster, what is one piece of advice you would give your first-year (freshman) self?
A: Never allow yourself to be content. Although Wooster is small, you can always meet new people, try new activities and clubs, see new things, and gain new experiences.
