Senior Salute: Alex Galbraith

Alex Galbraith Q&A Throughout the spring semester, we are honoring our senior student-athletes with a "Senior Salute" series. Today's featured senior is Alex Galbraith, a statistical and data sciences major from Orchard Park, New York. Galbraith is a member of the women's lacrosse team.

Q: Why did you choose to attend The College of Wooster?
A: When I was looking at colleges, I was mostly focused on academics, if the college had all the potential areas of study I might want to pursue, a smaller student-teacher ratio, and help resources I might need. Wooster had all of them and lacrosse was a bonus.

Q: What does being a Fighting Scot student-athlete mean to you?
A: To me, being a Fighting Scot means bringing the passion and drive I have for lacrosse into all aspects of my life. This means striving for greatness on and off the field and putting in extra work even when some days you do not feel like doing it, but you do it because you want to achieve greatness.

Q: What are some of your favorite memories as a student at The College of Wooster?
A: Some of my best memories are the little moments I have shared with my friends and teammates over the years. Some of my best memories are from the conversations I have with my team while on a bus ride or in Lowry at lunch.

Q: What is the best part about being a student-athlete at The College of Wooster?
A: I think the best part about being a student-athlete at Wooster is all the connections that you make within your team and outside of it. While I am closest with my team for obvious reasons, I have also created nice relationships with players on other teams because of the clubs and classes we partake in.

Q: What else were you involved with on campus besides your sport?
A: Besides lacrosse I always have a pretty packed schedule. I am a part of the College's student radio station and host "The Morning Mood with Alex Galbraith" once a week. I am in the Scot Marching Band and College of Wooster Pipe Band as a drummer. I work for athletics in game operations and in the Scot Center and I am in an A Capella group.

Q: Which College of Wooster faculty or staff member has made the greatest impact on you and why?
A:  While she no longer works here, I think Dr. Christina Horr had the greatest impact on me during my time at Wooster. She taught a majority of the classes I needed for my major and was always someone I could go to if I needed help in her classes or other classes.

Q: What other people or resources impacted your Wooster experience in a positive way and how did these people and resources set you up to be successful at Wooster?
A: APEX (Wooster's center for Advising, Planning, and Experiential Learning) and the Academic Resource Center definitely had the biggest impact on my Wooster experience. These resources helped me with creating study and work habits. They were good with helping me get accommodations for taking tests and figuring out how to get though each school year without trouble.

Q: Tell us a bit about your Independent Study project?
A: I am looking at if a movie's profit can be predicted based on its characteristics. I am looking at the amount of money a movie made and using different statistical methods to train a model and then test it to see how well it works at predicting profits.

Q: Tell us a bit about something cool you did as a student at The College of Wooster?
A: The coolest thing is being in the same athletic conference as my sister. We are close but also not at the same time, so when we do get to see each other outside of academic breaks, it is a nice surprise. When we play each other, it becomes a whole family affair.

Q: Reflecting back on your time at Wooster, what advice would you give your first-year self?
A: I would say do not be afraid to ask for help on things and it is ok to not know what you want to major in. I would also say do not procrastinate as much as you usually do because that will be the death of you.
