Scots Sting Yellow Jackets, 19-7
Wooster opens year with win
BEREA, Ohio – Junior Brynne Snaguski capitalized on two early Baldwin Wallace University yellow cards, and The College of Wooster women's lacrosse team rolled from there, taking Saturday's lid-lifter 19-7 at George Finnie Stadium.
Senior Kenzie Morris found Snaguski following a Lauren Comack yellow card, and the Scot-up goal tied Saturday's contest at two at the first quarter's 6:03 mark. Wooster was back on the player-up advantage when Greyson Johnson was sent off with 3:00 on the clock. Junior Sophia Mellis' groundball kept possession with Wooster before Snaguski tucked home the go-ahead goal with 2:40 on the clock.
Following the go-ahead score, senior Ashlyn Casey quickly got possession back for Wooster, causing a Taylor Miklos turnover. After working the ball to the offensive end, junior Bella Woodbury joined the scoring column, putting Wooster up 4-2 inside the final minute of the first quarter. Wooster's scoring run reached four on first-year Rowan Pilon's first collegiate goal, which came 39 ticks into the second quarter.
Wooster put Baldwin Wallace away with a 9-1 run that started with the Scots' third player-up goal of the game. Morris scored for the second time on a free-position shot with 6:30 to go before halftime. Mellis, junior Lizzie Hardy, senior Madelyn Noll, Mellis, senior Kaitlin McBride, and Snaguski all had at least one goal during the 9-1 scoring stretch.
Wooster's defense aided the decisive portion early in the third when Casey checked the ball out of Annette Doren's stick and came away with the groundball. Morris eventually scored for Wooster, with that goal putting the Scots comfortably up 13-5 with 11:51 left in the third.
In the fourth, Wooster established possession on one of Hardy's eight draw controls on the day. Junior Priya Nehria became the ninth Scot to be added to the scoring log before junior Sidney O'Rourke kept possession with Wooster on her ninth draw control of the day. Snaguski found Pilon for Wooster's final goal of the day, which came with 4:56 remaining.
Morris and Snaguski led Wooster with four goals each, while McBride rounded out the Scots with hat tricks on the day. Morris' last goal marked the senior's 150th and she is the ninth player in program history to hit the milestone and first since Ellie Hudson-Heck (2013-16). Hardy and O'Rourke accounted for 18 of Wooster's 19 draw controls. Senior Lexi Sarne had two groundballs, while Casey was credited with two of the Scots' five caused turnovers.
Doren scored three goals for Baldwin Wallace (1-2) and led the Yellow Jackets with five draw controls.
Wooster outshot Baldwin Wallace 28-16. The teams combined for just 25 turnovers.
Next, Wooster hosts Washington & Jefferson College (0-0) at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 26.
