Tale of Two Halves for Wooster in 14-8 Rockhurst Loss
Fighting Scots outscore Hawks 6-3 in the second half
WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster women's lacrosse team doubled up NCAA Div. II Rockhurst University 6-3 in the second half of Wednesday's 14-8 loss at John P. Papp Stadium.
Wooster (4-1) scored six of the final eight goals in the game, including five straight spanning the 8:17 mark of the third period to the 7:05 point of the fourth. Senior Kenzie Morris became the 10th player in program history to reach 200 points, doing so on the opening goal of Wooster's 5-0 run. Prior to the milestone score, Morris checked the ball away from Rockhurst's (5-1) Mae Beins, and junior Sophia Mellis scooped up the groundball in transition.
Senior Lexi Sarne caused three Rockhurst turnovers following Morris hitting the 200-point threshold. Following Sarne's caused turnovers, sophomore Audrey Richardson stopped an Elise Magee shot for one of her eight saves in the contest. Later, senior Ashlyn Casey knocked the ball from Riley Hoff's stick, leading to another Sarne groundball. A Morris-to-Lizzie Hardy scoring play ensued for the second goal of the run.
Wooster was within 12-7 when Hardy found junior Brynne Snaguski for a score with 7:05 left in the fourth. Snaguski's free-position goal had Wooster back within five at 13-8.
Wooster had numerous chances early to stick with Rockhurst during the Hawks' game-opening 5-0 run, but each shot was just off the mark. Two first-period Wooster shots hit the post, while several others went just wide of goal.
Hardy, Morris, and Snaguski each had two goals in the loss. Morris broke a tie for fourth-place on the program's all-time scoring list with her first goal of the night. Additionally, Morris cracked the program's top-five for draw controls, reaching 196 with three on the night. Hardy's seven draw controls led Wooster, and the junior is right behind Morris for the lead among active players with 193 for her career. Morris finished with four caused turnovers, while Sarne added three to the stat sheet.
Magee led all players with five goals. Kylee Pickens had seven draw controls. Beins matched Richardson with eight saves.
Rockhurst outshot Wooster 27-24 and held a slight lead in groundballs, 18-15. Wooster did have two more draw controls than Rockhurst, 13-11.
Next, Wooster is at Widener University (1-4) for a 1 p.m. game on Sunday, March 16. The game is the first of three for the Scots in Pennsylvania over spring break.
