Fourth-Quarter Surge Lifts Wooster Past Widener, 13-8
Morris first in program history with 200 points, 200 draw controls
CHESTER, Pennsylvania – The College of Wooster women's lacrosse team briefly overtook Widener University in the third period, then scored the final five goals in Sunday's 13-8 win at Dixon Field.
Senior Kaitlyn McBride cut around a Widener (1-5) defender with 13:10 remaining in the contest. First-year Rowan Pilon found the open Wooster (5-1) midfielder for the go-ahead score. Next, junior Brynne Snaguski had a step on a Pride defender on the way to the goal, leading to an easy find for senior Kenzie Morris. Wooster's lead grew to 11-8 when McBride buried her third of a co-game-leading four goals into the net with 7:45 left in Sunday's contest.
Despite having multiple possessions, Widener only managed five shots after McBride's go-ahead goal. The lone one Wooster allowed that was on target was stopped by sophomore Audrey Richardson, who matched a season-high with eight saves.
Earlier, Wooster worked its way back into the contest with a five-goal second period. Snaguski netted Wooster's first goal of the contest at the second period's 12:33 mark, and the Fighting Scots were within 6-5 at halftime following a late offensive surge. McBride scored with 22 seconds left before halftime, then Wooster immediately regained possession. Morris found junior Bella Woodbury for the Fighting Scots' fifth score of the stanza seconds before the buzzer.
Wooster's first lead of the day came in the final minute of the third period. Snaguski was the scorer who put Wooster ahead 8-7. Prior to goal, Morris deflected a pass, leading to a caused turnover after the midfielder was fouled trying to collect the groundball.
Snaguski matched McBride for the team-lead in goals at four. Morris won five draw controls to go over 200 for her career. She is the first player in program history with at least 200 draw controls and 200 points. Junior Lizzie Hardy slid up to fifth in program history in draw controls, reaching 197 after four in the game.
Clark Trowbridge netted three goals to lead Widener. Alex Krohn facilitated the offense to the tune of four assists. Regan Polacek was the leader with four groundballs, and the Pride's goalkeeper matched Richardson with eight saves.
Wooster capitalized on Widener cards, scoring four goals while being a player up. Wooster outshot Widener 32-23 and won the draw control stat 14-9. Elsewhere, Wooster was 13-of-14 on clears to a 19-of-27 showing for Widener.
Wooster's three-game Pennsylvania trip continues with a stop at Albright College (3-3). Wednesday's opening draw is at 4 p.m.
