Wooster downs Lake Forest 18-7
LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The College of Wooster women's lacrosse team reached double-digit victories for the ninth consecutive full season on Sunday when the Fighting Scots dispatched Lake Forest College 18-7.
Wooster (10-1) saw senior Kenzie Morris net six goals to slide up to third in program history. Morris surpassed Wooster legend Betty Title's 172 goals from 1983-86 and trails just Meg Wood's 212 goals from 1992-95 and Ellie Hudson-Heck's 200 goals from 2013-16.
Morris was one of two Scots to claim a top-three statistical ranking in program history on Sunday. Junior Lizzie Hardy was the other, moving up to third in draw controls, surpassing the 226 alumna Emma Lawrence tracked down from 2016-19. Hardy's eight Sunday afternoon draw controls were nearly as many as Lake Forest had as a team.
Wooster was well in control come halftime, as the Scots scored nine of the final 10 first-half goals as part of a larger 11-1 run. Morris did most of her scoring during the run, as four of the six goals came during it. She was complemented by junior Brynne Snaguski, who fired in consecutive goals late in the first quarter.
Wooster's defense did its job keeping Lake Forest (5-4) out of the picture early. Senior Lexi Sarne caused a Shannon Gibbons turnover deep in the defensive end with about 4:45 remaining in the opening quarter. That denied the Foresters a good look at tying the game at two. Once getting the ball into the offensive end, Snaguski buried a free-position goal that made it 3-1.
Junior Bella Woodbury did it all to put Wooster up 5-1 late in the first quarter. The midfielder caused a turnover, was credited with the groundball, and immediately deposited a goal into the net. Wooster kept up the pressure, with caused turnovers from both Morris and senior Kaitlyn McBride following Woodbury's goal that made it 5-1.
Later in the game, Lake Forest struggled offensively, as the Foresters turned the ball over six times in the final stanza. Five of the turnovers were directly caused by Wooster, including a pair deep in the defensive end. Sarne had her second caused turnover in the fourth, while senior Bella McCloskey's caused turnover in the final seconds was the Scots' 20th of the day.
Snaguski followed Morris in the scoring column with four goals. Woodbury had a six-point afternoon with three goals and three assists. Junior Sidney O'Rourke was right behind Hardy in draw controls with seven. Morris and Snaguski had three groundballs each, while six Scots had two caused turnovers on the game log. Sophomore Audrey Richardson made four saves.
Jenna Doctor scored four of Lake Forest's seven goals. Cecilia Adams had 13 saves.
Wooster outshot Lake Forest 41-16 and doubled up the Foresters 20-10 on groundballs. Wooster held Lake Forest to 8-of-21 on clears.
Next, Wooster opens North Coast Athletic Conference play with a 1 p.m. game at Oberlin College (6-4, 0-0 NCAC) on Saturday, April 5.
