Morris Wins it for Scots in Overtime, 12-11
Wooster remains undefeated in conference play
WOOSTER, Ohio – Kenzie Morris sent The College of Wooster women's lacrosse team home a 12-11 overtime winner over DePauw University on Saturday at John P. Papp Stadium.
Prior to Morris' overtime score, Saturday's back-and-forth clash featured four lead changes and seven ties. Wooster (13-1, 3-0 North Coast Athletic Conference) junior Lizzie Hardy won the opening draw control of the overtime stanza, and the shot by Morris with 4:55 left in the extra session was the only other play in the period.
Wooster tied the game at 11 on Hardy's goal with 3:14 remaining, then DePauw (6-6, 2-1 NCAC) had multiple chances to win in the final minutes. Mary Mason caused a turnover and cleaned up the groundball in the final 40 seconds, but a closing-seconds shot from Bridget Driscoll sailed high.
Senior Kaitlyn McBride gave Wooster its first lead of the game at 4-3 with 11:36 left in the opening half. McBride's score was one of a combined five player-up goals before halftime. Wooster led again at 8-7 on a McBride free-position goal at the third period's 6:27 mark. Wooster's next lead came on Morris' game-winner.
Wooster rallied from a 10-8 fourth-quarter deficit to tie the game at 10. Wooster had a breakaway chance in transition, but DePauw goalkeeper Niamh Callahan stopped a shot from junior Sophia Mellis. Classmate Madelyn Noll cleaned up the groundball, then immediately found Mellis for the follow-up goal that made it 10-9. Morris found Mellis following junior Sidney O'Rourke's draw control to tie the game at 10 with 5:08 to go in regulation.
Callahan's 15 saves and Wooster's lack of turnovers were major factors in Saturday's NCAC clash heading to overtime. Callahan stopped 15 Wooster shots, while the Scots had just 13 turnovers in the game.
McBride's four goals led Wooster. Hardy and Morris each won six draw controls. Senior Bella McCloskey led Wooster with four groundballs, and junior Brynne Snaguski, and junior Bella Woodbury both cleaned up three. Wooster had six players finish with a pair of caused turnovers, including seniors Ashlyn Casey, McBride, McCloskey, and Morris. Sophomore Audrey Richardson finished with four saves.
Kate Leone scored four goals for DePauw. Kate Sullivan had a game-high seven draw controls. Driscoll added three goals, four caused turnovers, and three groundballs.
Wooster held a slight 29-27 lead on shots and had 20 groundballs to DePauw's 14. The Scots edged out the Tigers 14-13 on draw controls and went 19-of-22 on clears to a 15-of-20 mark for DePauw. The teams combined for 19 free-position shots, of which DePauw was 4-of-7.
Prior to Saturday's game, Wooster celebrated its eight-member senior class.
Next, Wooster travels to Kenyon College (5-7, 1-2 NCAC) for a 5 p.m. game on Wednesday, April 16.
