Second-seeded Wittenberg University was the recipient of a lucky
bounce off the head of a College of Wooster defender en route to a
1-0 double-overtime victory Saturday in the final of the 2008 North
Coast Athletic Conference Tournament.
The loss ends the Fighting Scots' season with a 14-6 overall
record and a 5-3 NCAC mark after Wooster secured the No. 4 seed in
the tournament via a 1-0 victory over Denison University on the
final weekend of the regular season. Wooster advanced to the final
game on Saturday following a 1-0 win on Wednesday in tournament
semifinals over the top-seeded Big Red.
The game-winning sequence began with Wittenberg defender Kelly
Foley played a ball into the Wooster penalty box from about 30
yards out. The ball redirected off a Wooster defender, eventually
finding the back of the net for the game-winner with 1:13 remaining
in the second overtime.
Statistically, Wittenberg outshot the Scots by a 9-4 margin,
including 8-1 over the final three periods, and the Tigers held a
decisive edge in corner kicks at 9-2.
Defensively, Wooster goalkeeper Sara Flannelly stopped four shots
during the contest, while Tigers' goalie Jordan Bamberger
recorded two saves.
The Tigers move to 11-3-6 on the season, and will advance to the
NCAA Division III Tournament for the third consecutive year.
