With its second 4-1 victory during a 24-hour period, this time
over visiting Kalamazoo College on Sunday afternoon, The College of
Wooster women's soccer team has gotten off to the best start
in program history, having won all six of its matches thus far.
Wooster, which had begun a season 5-0 more than once, including
last year, but never reached 6-0, overcame an early scare from
upstart Kalamazoo (3-4). The Hornets' Jamie Franks scored an
unassisted goal just 91 seconds into Sunday's action to give
her squad the lead.
That wouldn't last long, though, as the Fighting Scots
knotted things up during the ninth minute via freshman Maggie
Kehm's first collegiate goal. Wooster would add two more
goals, both courtesy of the Chantal Koechli-Liz Mott tandem, before
the half was up. First, Koechli scored on a Mott assist in the 27th
minute and then Mott headed in a ball off a Koechli corner kick
during the 33rd minute.
The Scots added to that 3-1 cushion early in the second half, with
Kate Kiley booting in her third goal of the year after receiving a
through ball from Koechli. It marked Koechli's sixth assist
this season, and she also has three goals for 12 points
already.
Wooster, which beat Bethany College 4-1 Saturday, combined to
outshoot its opponents 65-14 over the weekend. Minding the net on
Sunday was Sara Flannelly for the first half and Alix Hoffman in
the second. They each recorded two saves, while Kalamazoo's
Taylor Comiskey had six.
The win streak will be tested on Wednesday when the Scots host Case
Western Reserve University (4-1) at 5 p.m.
