Mott-Peters Combo Lifts Scots Past Spartans in OT

WOOSTER, Ohio – Just 21 seconds into overtime, the combination of Liz Mott and Kelsey Peters provided The College of Wooster a 2-1 victory over Case Western Reserve University, as the Fighting Scots' women's soccer team opened the 2010 season in exciting fashion at a warm Carl Dale Field on Wednesday.

It appeared Case Western Reserve (0-1) had the momentum after sending the match into extra time with just over a minute left in regulation. But Wooster (1-0) quickly maneuvered the ball down the field, and Peters, positioned on the right side, crossed it to the middle where Mott drilled a diving header past the Spartans' goalie. It marked the senior's 23rd career goal.

The Scots lit up the scoreboard first around the midway point of the second half. During a corner kick sent into the box by Bri Fulmer, Mary Riney emerged from a pack of players with the sixth goal of her career.

Case Western Reserve had a couple of good looks during the final four minutes and converted on a Kendra Simmons' header that was directed into the upper right corner of the goal. Simmons was assisted by Devyn Lee.

Overall, Wooster had more chances, holding a 13-7 shot advantage with one of those attempts hitting a post and another a crossbar, and Scot 'keeper Michele Ring needed to just make two saves – one in the 27th minute and one in the 49th – to preserve the win.

The Scots head to Kentucky for a two-match swing this weekend.
