Piper’s Goal Lifts Scots Past Regionally-Ranked Denison

Paige Piper A single goal during the 64th minute, coupled with a stout defensive effort, was enough for The College of Wooster to secure a 1-0 win over Denison University in a key North Coast Athletic Conference women's soccer match-up Saturday afternoon in front of a Homecoming crowd at Carl Dale Field.

The Fighting Scots' victory marked their third over the last four matches with the traditionally-tough Big Red and gives them a perfect 2-0 start to conference play. Denison (7-4-2, 1-1-0 NCAC) had entered the day's action ranked No. 4 in the Great Lakes Region coaches' poll.

In a game with few scoring opportunities for either squad, Wooster, 8-5 overall, found the mark on one possession midway through the second. Paige Piper, positioned on the right wing, made a quick turn with the ball and delivered a shot to the opposite corner, where it grazed off the crossbar and into the net. Piper upped her team-leading goal total to seven this fall.

The Scots' defense made Piper's score hold up, as the Big Red had few chances the rest of the way. Goalkeeper Michele Ring was credited with three saves en route to her third shutout this fall.

Wooster continues NCAC play Tuesday night at Oberlin College (4-9, 1-1 NCAC).
