Allegheny Gets by Wooster in NCAC Semis on Penalty Kicks

Paige Piper WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster and Allegheny College played a 110 minute marathon Wednesday, with the match resulting in a 2-2 tie, but it was the Gators who advanced in the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament by winning a penalty kick shootout 4-3, ending the Fighting Scots memorable season at Carl Dale Field.

Trailing 2-1 early in the second half, Paige Piper netted the equalizer, as she drilled a shot from just outside the goal box that deflected off the goalkeeper's gloves and splashed the back of the net at 58:45. From that moment on, Wooster (11-6-2) and Allegheny (14-1-4) remained deadlocked through regulation, and two overtime periods, culminating in a rare shootout to decide the outcome.

Both schools missed on their first shot attempts, as Wooster's was saved by goalkeeper Emily Karr, and Allegheny's boot sailed well over the crossbar. The Scots then connected on their next three kicks, with Kerry Kiley, Liz Mott, and Bri Fulmer beating the 'keeper, but Allegheny matched Wooster along the way, and eventually won when Wooster missed and Emily Byers delivered on the Gators' final attempt.

Wooster got on the scoreboard first at 18:12, when Bri Fulmer sent a corner kick into the goal box, and Erin Davison was there to complete the play. It was just Davison's third goal of the season.

About seven minutes later, Allegheny tied the match on a deep free kick from Abby Silvester, and then early in the second half, Silvester blasted in another free kick from outside the goal box to give the Gators a 2-1 lead. Piper tied things up with her aforementioned goal, which eventually forced overtime.

Both Maggie Kehm and Erika Kay had solid looks at the goal in the first overtime, as Kehm took a shot from the left end line that almost curved into the goal, and Kay blasted a shot that was corraled by the goalie. Defensively, Kiley was key in keeping Allegheny off the board, as she stepped in and halted several breakaways late in the match.

In goal, Ring tallied seven saves, while Karr, who had allowed just six goals all season coming into the match, was credited with six saves.

Wooster, who had won its first NCAC championship since 1996 with its win over Wittenberg University Saturday, was hosting its first NCAC Tournament game in program history.
