Case Western Reserve University took a 2-1 lead in the 53rd minute, and that goal held up as the game-winner, as the Spartans topped the Fighting Scots in a non-conference tilt between two northeast Ohio schools Saturday evening at Cleveland, Ohio.

The Spartans (6-1-1) got on the scoreboard just over six minutes into the action, when Kendra Simmons crossed to Deana Levey and the latter beat the 'keeper to put her team up 1-0.

About 13 minutes later, Wooster (5-4-0) knotted up the match when goalkeeper Michele Ring blasted a well-placed free kick from midfield into a scrum of players around the Case Western Reserve net. Paige Piper corralled the kick and put a shot on goal that deflected off of the cross bar, but Kelsey Peters was there for the rebound, and she netted the equalizer on her first goal of the season.

It was Simmons who put the Spartans up for good early in the second half, when much like Wooster scored earlier, she rebounded a shot attempt that hit the cross bar and found the back of the net.

Ring made seven saves in the setback, while her counterpart, Anna Kennedy, recorded three saves. Case Western Reserve outshot Wooster 17-5 on the day.

Next, Wooster will get its conference schedule started by hosting Kenyon College Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
