WOOSTER, Ohio – In a battle of the top-two teams in the North Coast Athletic Conference, Wittenberg University scored early in the second half, and with The College of Wooster trying to press up field, added an insurance goal later for a 2-0 decision at Carl Dale Field Saturday afternoon.

The result allowed Wittenberg (9-3-3, 5-0-1 NCAC) to overtake Wooster (10-5-1, 5-0-0 NCAC) atop the league standings with two regular season games remaining.

Following a scoreless first half that didn't see many scoring opportunities for either team (five combined shots), the Tigers took advantage of a failed clear in the Fighting Scots' defensive backfield as Kaylee Gialamas gained control of the ball just inside the top of the goal box and sent a low shot into the back of the net 1:33 into the second stanza.

Wooster nearly came up with the equalizer less than three minutes later when Erika Kay dribbled into the box from the right wing, and with Wittenberg 'keeper Melissa Gartner charging out to challenge, Kay attempted to chip the ball but Gartner was able to get a piece of it for the save.

The Tigers' Kailey Striebel made an individual play during the 76th minute for the two-goal cushion. With possession, she sprinted down the left side of the field and sent a well-placed shot inside the far post.

Erin Davison nearly got the Scots back in the game. In the 81st minute, positioned on the left, she had space and shot towards the upper right, but it was just inches off target.

As time ticked down, Kay made another strong run into the box only to see her attempt glance off the left post.

For the game, Davison and Kay were credited with three shots apiece and Michele Ring with six saves.

Wooster will travel to eighth-place Oberlin College (1-13-1, 1-5-0 NCAC) on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
