Big Red Upend Scots 1-0 in NCAC Semifinal Action

Erika Kay
Wooster's Erika Kay leaps high to win this wet header (notice the drops of water coming off the ball) over Allison Scarlott during Thursday's NCAC Tournament semifinal match-up.

WOOSTER, Ohio – At a cold, wet Carl Dale Field where the temperature didn't crack 40 degrees, all it took was one goal for the No. 3 seed, Denison University, to knock off second-seeded College of Wooster 1-0 in a North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament semifinal match-up Thursday.

During the opening half, Wooster (12-6-1) possessed the ball for the majority of the time, but was unable to generate many good scoring looks. Of its seven shots, the best chance came in the 39th minute when Erika Kay made a run from the left into the box, but goalkeeper Andrea Karl of Denison (6-10-2) successfully charged out to keep the game scoreless.

Both teams had more offensive chances in the second, starting with the Big Red, who converted one during the 49th minute. From the right side, Lauren Jay lifted a cross to the center of the box where Andrea Witte neatly headed it in under the cross bar for her fourth goal of the season.

Desperately trying to notch the equalizer, the Fighting Scots had a series of near-misses. In the 58th minute, the ball came to an open Rachael Davis near the left post, but the freshman defender lifted the shot high.

Another Wooster scoring chance was stuffed by Karl in the 67th minute. On a delivery from the left, Paige Piper went for a sliding attempt, only to collide with the Denison goalie who covered up the ball with help from a defender.

The Scots' best opportunity all game to get on the scoreboard was turned away in the 74th minute. The Big Red defense had trouble clearing the ball on a Wooster corner kick, with Kay eventually settling it and taking a rip past the 'keeper to the left, however, Denison defender Alicia Blake was there on the goal line to clear it away.

Karl made her fourth and final save in the 90th minute on a shot from just inside the midfield line to seal the outcome, as the Big Red advance to Saturday's NCAC Tournament championship game.

Wooster outshot Denison 14-5.
