Scots Victorious in Return to Play

Grace Gascoigne In their first official game since the fall of 2019, The College of Wooster women's soccer team captured a 3-1 win over Marietta College in front of the home crowd.

In her first official game as a Fighting Scot, junior Katie Schumacher lifted Wooster with two second half goals, including the decisive strike that broke the 1-1 tie. Schumacher broke the tie just seven minutes after Marietta's Angelene Kontul scored the Pioneers' lone goal in the 60th minute.

Sophomore Grace Gascoigne assisted from inside the box to find Schumacher near the penalty arc where she sent her shot inside the upper left side of the goal.

Not finished there, Schumacher gave the Scots some insurance just three minutes later. Sophomore Naomi Mann found Schumacher in the box and after a failed defensive tackle, Schumacher once again connected on the left side of the goal.

The Scots cruised for the final 20 minutes. First-year goalkeeper Amanda Flory collected her first win after playing all 90 minutes and making five saves.

Junior captain Helena Janczak set the tone early with a score in the 27th minute. Mann got the assist this time with a perfectly placed pass to Janczak, who was positioned squarely in front of the 6-yard box.

Wooster (1-0) controlled the game throughout, outshooting the Pioneers (0-1) 25-8 and taking 11 corner kicks to Marietta's three.

Wooster, who defeated Marietta 1-0 to open the 2019 season, improves to 15-0-0 all-time against the Pioneers.

This weekend the Scots head to Penn State Behrend for two games, starting with a contest against Fredonia State on Saturday.
