Wooster Advances in NCAC Tournament After 10-9 PK Shootout

celebration GAMBIER, Ohio – The College of Wooster women's soccer team withstood a grueling semifinal against Kenyon College in the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament on Tuesday as the Scots scored on 10 consecutive penalty kick attempts to advance and keep its season alive.

After Wooster (10-7-2) and Kenyon (8-8-2) tied going scoreless in regulation and two overtimes, the teams went to a penalty kick shootout. Neither team held the advantage through nine kicks until Kenyon missed wide on their 10th, and Wooster first-year Maggie Stieby hit the deciding shot.

Lining up and connecting for the Scots before Stieby were Hallie GeorskeyLillian MillerMiura WileyBailey FarrellAlexa BencicKatie SchumacherKelsey StoneNaomi Mann and Helena Janczak.

The game almost played out like it did in the regular season where Kenyon took a 1-0 win after a goal in the 71st minute. Wooster once again started strong and had ample opportunities to score, outshooting the Ladies 14-5 in the first half and 27-20 for the game.

Teddi Farson had a header go just high in the ninth minute and another shot off the post five minutes later. Mann shortly followed with a shot wide, and Schumacher later had a couple shots miss wide.

Kenyon had opportunities to put the game away in the second half but missed wide on shots to end regulation and another to end in overtime.

Wooster keeper Amanda Flory made eight saves and the NCAC Athlete of the Week recorded her third consecutive shutout. Kenyon keeper Leah Anderson made five saves.

Wooster last went to PK's in the NCAC Tournament in the 2017 semifinal where Kenyon advanced 3-1 after a 3-3 game. The Scots are now 1-0-2 against Kenyon in the NCAC Tournament.

Wooster will face the winner of the Denison University and Wittenberg University matcup, which takes place at 5 p.m. Wednesday in Granville. The championship game is slated for Saturday at the site of the highest remaining seed.
