Tigers Defeat Scots 3-2 in NCAC Championship Game

Helena Janczak The third-seeded College of Wooster women's soccer team opened fast but left two goals unanswered late as the fourth-seeded Wittenberg University Tigers claimed a 3-2 win in the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament Championship game on Saturday at Carl Dale Field.

Wittenberg first-year Brooke Mullis hit the game winner from about 25 yards out after the Tigers were awarded a free kick. Mullis made her kick count and sailed the ball over Wooster keeper Amanda Flory.

Mullis had a game to remember. The first-year entered with no points but was involved in all three scoring plays for the Tigers, assisting on the other two.

Saturday's game started like the regular season matchup with senior Miura Wiley striking first. It took her a little longer than 35 seconds to score, however, as the senior scored her 12th goal of the year with just 2:05 elapsed.

The Tigers had one corner kick for the game, and they used it to tie the game 1-1 in the 37th minute. Mullis found Sydney Artis in front of the net for the score.

Wooster came out of halftime with another quick score. A cross from Hallie Krzys found Teddi Farson in front of the net for the header score in the 49th minute.

Shortly after, Mullis assisted on a score from Hannah Heald in the 56th minute after a questionable call led to a free kick in Wooster's defensive zone.

Flory had three saves, and her counterpart Emma Schewe made six. While Wittenberg capitalized on its one corner, Wooster could not do much with the 10 they received. The Scots also outshot the Tigers 28-9.

Wittenberg (10-8-1) wins the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. Wooster (10-8-2) snaps its run, having collected the tournament's last two titles.

Mullis was named the Tournament MVP. This was Wittenberg's sixth tournament title, which ties them with Ohio Wesleyan University for the most.

Flory, Alexa Bencic and Kelsey Stone were named to the All-Tournament Team for Wooster.
