Women's Soccer Takes On Spain

Photo Gallery

The College of Wooster women's soccer team recently embarked on a week long trip to Spain! The team is there for one week and will play a series of matches, receive training and, of course, experience the sights and sounds of Spain. A daily journal of the experience provided by members of the teams is below.

May 14 – Arriving in Spain – by Aly Brugh '24
Women's soccer at the airport

Women's soccer takes on Spain! We are all so thankful for the opportunity to spend a week in Spain under the hot sun, eating delicious meals, visiting beautiful cities, and, of course, playing soccer. For me, I'm most excited for the beach day. I mean come on, laying on a beach in SPAIN! What more could you ask for? I also feel very fortunate to be able to spend an extra week with the graduating class as they will be extremely missed.
On behalf of our team, we want to thank our coaching staff, families, donors, and all others who've supported this trip, we couldn't have done it without you! Follow us on Instagram @woosoccer to stay updated with some of the events from our trip.

May 15 – Getting acquainted – by Piper Farrell '25

After getting past a delayed flight and baggage claim, everyone enjoyed a scenic drive to the hotel. On the drive, we saw a mountainside monastery and some stunning views of the ocean from the top of the hills, which was followed by some relaxation and exploring the hotel. Finally, a quick trip around Lloret de Mar and a beach visit was ended by a mind blowing dinner at the hotel. Can't wait for a day of soccer and exploring Sitges tomorrow!

May 16 – Wooster soccer takes on Sitges – by Kameryn Nelson '26

This morning the team had a training session. It was good to get our legs moving before our game against Sant Pete de Ribes. This afternoon we took the bus to Sitges, another town along the coast. We went on a walking tour with our guide, David, and then had time to explore the shops and restaurants around town. After exploring we played our game right outside of Sitges. We came away with a 3-0 win, a great way to start off our games here in Spain!

May 17 – Visiting Besalú – by Ellie Saguto '25

Happy Woo Wednesday! Today the Scots explored Besalú located in Girona, Spain. Besalú is a medieval town filled with amazing architecture and local shops filled with various keepsakes. Not only was the town itself beautiful but the surrounding background as well, which was filled with massive volcanoes. Fair to say the team enjoyed a magnificent visit to the town of Besalú.
The fun didn't stop there. Following the visit the team traveled to play a match against Girona FC in Torres de Palau. While the outcome was not one the team had hoped for (a 1-0 loss) the Scots delivered a strong performance and came together as a team. It was a fun match to play and well worth the travel. Another eventful day for the Scots in Spain.

May 18 – One last ride – by Teddi Farson '23

Today, the team was lucky enough to visit the city of Vic! It was filled with quaint coffee shops, many tasty bakeries and so much history. The streets were filled with important aspects of the Spanish culture. My favorite part of the day was walking around the Cathedral of St. Peter. As I walked into the church, I was in complete "awe." The fine detail of the architecture was overwhelmingly beautiful.
We finished the day playing against the Vic Riuprimer Refo Women from the Spanish Primera Nacional Women's Division. It was a great opportunity to complete against a team with such patience while passing the ball across the field and technical skill. I was extremely proud of how my teammates performed. While the sightseeing was amazing, the most impactful part of my day was being able to wear the Wooster Women's Soccer jersey one last time. This program has given me so many opportunities to thrive as a player and individual. To be able to finish my Wooster career in Spain next to my teammates and playing under these amazing coaches is a once in a lifetime opportunity that I will forever cherish. I'll never be able to thank my Wooster soccer family enough.

May 19 – Barcelona stop – by Abby Showalter '24

Today we visited Barcelona! We began at FC Barcelona stadium, Camp Nou, and took a tour of the stadium and museum. I know everyone was excited to see the stadium in person before they begin the upcoming renovation. We then had some time to walk La Rambla and explore the gothic quarter. I had a delicious paella (so good!) and looked at the beautiful buildings. My personal favorite part of the day was getting to see La Sagrada Família, a late nineteenth century cathedral which is still being built! It was an absolute whirlwind of a day and I'm so glad I got to appreciate it with my team!

May 20 – Near the end – by Grace Gascoigne '24

Today was my favorite day and the best one to end on! We visited Girona and watched a professional La Liga match between Girona and Villa Real. It was surreal to watch all the fans come together, the whole stadium knew all the cheers. Sadly, Girona lost (2-1) but I was secretly rooting for Villa Real since they were the team I researched for a pre-Spain assignment with the team! We then went into the Gothic quarters of Girona and saw some of the areas where Game of Thrones scenes were shot. We were also super lucky and found a flower festival that was being held in the city. A lot of the cathedrals and avenues were decorated and there were people from all over visiting. It was a beautiful place and a wonderful experience to end on :)

May 21 – Back home – by Claire Goodwin Kelly '26

Today was our travel day back home! The day started with one final breakfast at our hotel in Llorett de Mar, which we took full advantage of before loading up on the bus to begin our over 24-hour travel day. Since our week in Spain had been packed to the brim with soccer games, exploring different cities, an amazing visit to Camp Neu and Barcelona, and a La Liga match, the team mostly caught up on sleep! Although an unexpected 10-hour layover in Toronto was definitely not ideal, we made the most of it, filling the time by writing in our trip journals, playing cards, and reminiscing on an unforgettable trip. Thank you so much to everyone involved in making this trip possible!
