RICHMOND, Ind. – The College of Wooster women's soccer team have not lost a season opener since 2011, and they kept that streak alive on Saturday with a 2-0 win at Earlham College.
After a couple of ties the past two years, Wooster got back in the win column thanks to a shutout performance from goalkeepers Kameryn Nelson and Lucy Carlin. Nelson played until the 84th minute and made a save as Wooster's defense was up to the task of allowing just one shot total for the game.
Meanwhile, Wooster took 27 shots, highlighted by goals from Bailey Farrell and first-year Emma Fischer.
For Farrell, it was her fifth career goal, matching her total from a year ago. She scored early, in the seventh minute, in what ended up being the game winner.
Wooster made a push downfield as senior Hallie Kryzs found open field down the right side, only to find Farrell right in front of the net for the score.
Wooster held that lead through halftime and into the 71st minute until Fischer scored her first collegiate goal thanks to the assist from first-year Annie Henegar.
In total, Wooster took 10 shots on goal as well and 10 corners. Earlham (0-1) keeper Makayla Hurey made eight saves.
The Scots (1-0) return to action Sunday when they stay in Indiana and travel to Franklin College.
