MARIETTA – A second half surge from The College of Wooster women's soccer team erased a deficit and then a tie in less than a minute as the Scots defeated Marietta College 3-2 on Wednesday.
The Scots trailed 2-1 after the first, and it stayed that way for the first 15 minutes of the second half. That was until Wooster picked up some momentum and scored a quick succession of goals.
To tie the game at 2-2, senior Lily Glaza was the beneficiary of a free kick as her shot from just outside the box sailed over the Marietta keeper's head.
Not even a minute later, Wooster kept the pressure on and took advantage of a Marietta defense that could not clear a ball. Newcomer Alyssa Lubba snuck in, took the ball away and promptly scored what would become the game winner.
The first half went mostly Marietta's way. In particular, it went well for Angelene Kontul who scored both goals for the Pioneers.
She first scored on an one-on-one in the 22nd minute. She then had another toward the end of the half on a shot from way out that went over keeper Kameryn Nelson's reach.
However, between those goals, Wooster scored in the 36th minute. A corner kick from Libby Kiker got through a scrum of players and found the foot of junior Charlotte Sefcik, who scored her second goal in as many games.
Wooster outshot Marietta 17-10. Wooster had eight shots on goal and four corners compared to Marietta's six shots on goal and two corners.
Nelson ended up with four saves for the win after playing the full 90 minutes in net. Marietta's Sarah Legg made five saves.
Wooster improves to 3-1-1, while Marietta falls to 1-2-2. The Scots host the University of Pitt.-Greensburg on Saturday.
