The College of Wooster women's tennis team closed out its
season with a 5-2 victory over Earlham College in the seventh-place
match at the 25th annual North Coast Athletic Conference
Championships hosted by Kenyon College on Sunday afternoon.
Wooster, 6-16 overall this spring, opened the championship with a
loss to eventual champion and top-seeded Denison University 5-0
Saturday afternoon. The next match for the Fighting Scots happened
on Sunday morning when Ohio Wesleyan University handed Wooster
another loss by a 5-2 score with Wooster's points coming from
Boo Flynn at No. 6 singles (6-0, 6-3), and the duo of Erin Bauer
and Suzanne Hamby at No. 3 doubles (9-8), setting up a final
seventh-place match between Wooster and Earlham College.
The Scots, who beat the Quakers 5-4 during the regular season, won
two of three doubles matches to start, as the No. 1 tandem of
Elissa Lauber and Kelsey Jenkins won 8-4, while Bauer and Hamby won
by forfeit at third doubles.
Wooster won three of the four finished singles matches at the
bottom of the lineup to seal the win. At No. 4, Bauer secured a
tough three-set victory over Cory Matheiu. Bauer dropped the
opening set 6-2, but rebounded with a convincing 6-2 mark in the
second, and a 6-3 score in the decisive set. Grimanis and Hamby
were the other singles winners at No. 5 (6-1, 6-2) and No. 6 (by
forfeit), respectively.
Denison won the team title with a 5-0 win over Kenyon College in
the finals.
