The College of Wooster women's tennis team made its 2009
debut Thursday, and despite several closely-contested matches, the
Fighting Scots came up on the short end of a 7-2 decision to
visiting John Carroll University.
Doubles play put Wooster in a slight 2-1 hole, with its victory
coming from the No. 3 team of Ashley Stockwell and Boo Flynn. The
first-year duo prevailed by an 8-3 count.
The Scots added a hard-fought win at the top of the singles lineup
from Elissa Lauber. She split the first two sets 6-4 with John
Carroll's Amy Marchlen and then they played a super
tiebreaker to determine the third, with Lauber edging Marchlen
10-8. Singles matches at fifth and sixth singles also went the
distance, however, the Blue Streaks came out on top to complement
straight-set wins from the No. 2-No. 4 slots.
Next Wednesday, Wooster will have a chance to even its record when
it hosts Muskingum College.
