Youthful Scots Experience Some Success in Hilton Head

The College of Wooster women's tennis team continued to demonstrate improvement in the 2009 season, as it won one regional match and nearly came away with another during its annual trip to Hilton Head, S.C. Highlighting the Scots' results were an 8-1 rout of Greenville College and a tough 5-4 setback at the hands of a 13-5 Westminster (Pa.) College squad.

Over the six-match trip, which also included a 7-2 loss to an Olivet College team that improved to 6-0 at the time, Wooster (2-6) was led by No. 1 singles player Elissa Lauber. She went 3-3, winning two hard-fought three-setters versus Olivet (4-6, 7-5, 10-6) and Westminster (5-7, 6-1, 10-4) and also routing her opponent from Greenville 6-2, 6-0.

Exhibiting the team's depth, the Scots' most successful singles player was freshman Boo Flynn. She triumphed in four matches, one at No. 5 and three at No. 6, highlighted by a double bagel (6-0, 6-0) of her Westminster foe.

At fourth singles, fellow first-year Kelsey Jenkins posted back-to-back victories midway though the trip, coming against Westminster (6-3, 6-3) and Greenville (6-3, 6-0), while recording one singles win apiece were Ashley Stockwell, Brenna Hart, and Erin Bauer. Stockwell, yet another freshman, was at the No. 2 position for five matches, defeating Greenville by a 6-0, 6-2 count while also suffering two very close losses to Westminster (7-6, 5-7, 10-6) and Smith College (6-4, 6-7, 11-9).

In doubles, Stockwell and Flynn picked up two victories at No. 3, while atop the lineup the majority of the time were Lauber and Jenkins. They registered an 8-4 win in the Greenville match.

Wooster's northern schedule will resume Wednesday when it hosts Allegheny College in the teams' North Coast Athletic Conference lid-lifter.
