Scots Split a Pair of Matches at Wittenberg

The College of Wooster topped Earlham College 5-4, but could not complete the sweep of a couple of North Coast Athletic Conference West Division opponents Saturday as the host of the tri-match, Wittenberg University, took an 8-1 decision during women's tennis action.

Wooster (5-12) jumped out to a 3-0 lead versus Earlham (4-7) with a sweep of the doubles. At the top of the order, Elissa Lauber and Kelsey Jenkins doubled up their foes, 8-4, and Ashley Stockwell and Boo Flynn prevailed by the same exact score at No. 2. Erin Bauer and Suzanne Hamby were even more dominant at the third position with an 8-3 victory.

Three of the six singles matches were close, with two of the exceptions being Flynn's 6-2, 6-1 triumph at No. 5 and Lauren Grimanis' 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 6. Lauber rested, giving Stockwell her collegiate debut at No. 1 singles and the first-year dropped a hard-fought 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) match there.

In the final match of the day, Wittenberg (12-4), which also defeated Earlham 8-1, was the team that held a commanding 3-0 lead following the doubles. The Scots' best effort came from Stockwell and Flynn in an 8-4 loss at No. 2.

Wooster's point came from Grimanis, a freshman who was making her collegiate tennis debut. She took a third-set super tiebreaker, 10-8, after splitting the first two sets 6-3 and 7-5 at No. 6 singles. Stockwell also extended her match at No. 2 to three sets before falling 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8).
