Scots’ Depth Shines During Six-Match Spring Break Swing

The College of Wooster women's tennis team continued to demonstrate its depth during a recently completed spring break trip to Hilton Head, S.C., but the Fighting Scots were only able to translate that into one win and a series of close losses.

The annual southern swing started well with a 7-2 victory over regional opponent Trine University, only to see another regional foe, Macalester College, turn the tables the next day. That evened Wooster's season record at 2-2 and then the Scots scored team points in three consecutive matches, coming up on the short end each time though, including a tough 5-4 loss to Sweet Briar College.

Against Trine, Wooster swept the Nos. 3-6 singles with Boo Flynn, Erin Bauer, Kelsey Jenkins, and Lauren Grimanis combining to give up just three total games. At the fifth and sixth positions, respectively, Jenkins and Grimanis carried over that success versus Macalester, with the former winning in straight sets (6-1, 6-3) and the latter in a third-set super tiebreaker (6-1, 2-6, 10-8).

Grimanis moved up a spot in the lineup against Ithaca College, but still came out a victor, prevailing 6-1, 6-4 at No. 5, and the next day, Jenkins was the squad's lone singles winner versus another upstate New York school as she triumphed 6-2, 1-6, 10-7 over her foe at No. 4 from Nazareth College.

Continuing her winning ways, Grimanis notched a 7-5, 6-1 decision at the fifth position in the Sweet Briar match, and the Scots' other singles victor that day was Cory Smith at No. 6 (6-0, 6-1).

In doubles action over the spring trip, Elissa Lauber/Jenkins and Ashley Stockwell/Flynn each won a pair of matches at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, respectively, while Suzanne Hamby paired with two different partners during victories at No. 3.

Wooster's northern schedule will resume March 24, when it travels to HeidelbergHeidelberg University (2-4).
