Scots Go 3-2 During Hilton Head Trip

The College of Wooster women's tennis team won three of its five matches, and was just two points shy of taking all of them, during the Fighting Scots' recently completed spring break trip to Hilton Head, S.C.

The annual southern swing included two decisive victories, as Wooster rolled past Stevenson University 8-1 and Messiah College 7-2, and three 5-4 matches. The Scots edged Edgewood College by a point and fell victim to single-point losses versus Shepherd University and Richard Stockton College of New Jersey.

A great deal of Wooster's success came in doubles, in which the teams combined to go 11-4. Leading the way were Ashley Stockwell and Kelsey Jenkins, who went 3-1 atop the lineup, and Lauren Grimanis and Suzanne Hamby, who matched that 3-1 mark while at the No. 2 position. Also of note, in three matches that Lauren Gilliss and Cory Smith were paired together at No. 3, they prevailed in all three.

In singles action, Stockwell picked up two victories at the top of the ladder, headlined by an 11-9 third-set super tiebreaker triumph in the Scots' win over Edgewood. Grimanis made a seamless transition from the bottom-third of the lineup (No. 5/6) to No. 2, as the junior prevailed in three of five matches at that spot.

Winning a squad-high four matches was Hamby, who went 3-1 at the No. 4 position, then was promoted to No. 3 against Messiah and won there (6-2, 7-5), too. Jenkins contributed two singles victories, as did Gilliss, who emerged with a 2-1 record at No. 5.

Wooster's northern schedule resumes Tuesday against Muskingum University (0-1).
