Wooster Sweeps Past Muskingum 9-0

Fresh off a 3-2 spring trip at Hilton Head, S.C., The College of Wooster women's tennis team cruised past visiting Muskingum University on Tuesday, sweeping the Muskies 9-0 inside Central Tennis & Fitness Club.

The closest match of the day came at No. 1 doubles, where Ashley Stockwell and Kelsey Jenkins of Wooster (4-3) worked their way to a 9-8 win, prevailing 7-2 in the tiebreaker. The combinations of Lauren Grimanis-Suzanne Hamby and Lauren Gilliss-Cory Smith triumphed 8-3 and 8-2 at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, as the Scots took a commanding 3-0 lead into singles play.

Wooster continued its dominance, taking all six singles matches in straight sets. Stockwell got past her opponent at No. 1 by a 6-1, 6-4 count and Grimanis eased to a 6-4, 6-2 victory at the second position. Hamby and Jenkins gave up just one game combined at No. 3 (6-1, 6-0) and No. 4 (6-0, 6-0), respectively, while Gilliss and Margaret Trainor finished the sweep, with Gilliss a 6-4, 6-1 winner at No. 5 and Trainor 6-0, 6-2 at No. 6.

The Scots are off from competition until next Wednesday (March 30) when Heidelberg University (1-6) visits at 4 p.m.
