The College of Wooster women's tennis team went back over the .500 mark for the season by edging the University of Mount Union 5-4 in a highly-competitive, non-conference match at the Central Tennis & Fitness Club Wednesday in Wooster, Ohio.
Wooster (6-5) gained a 2-1 lead through the doubles matches, as Lauren Grimanis and Suzanne Hamby teamed up for an 8-4 triumph at No. 2 and Lauren Gilliss and Cory Smith prevailed 8-3 at the third position.
The six singles matches were split evenly between the two squads, with two of them going the distance via third-set tiebreakers. First, the Fighting Scots' Kelsey Jenkins won in straight sets at No. 2 (6-4, 6-1) and Boo Flynn only yielded one game at No. 5 (6-0, 6-1). With Wooster dropping a series of close matches at the first, third, and fourth spots, it came down to Gilliss and her opponent at No. 6. The Scot sophomore dropped the first set 6-4, then evened things with a decisive 6-2 second set, and they went back and forth during the third before Gilliss eventually pulled out a 7-6 (7-4) victory.
Next, Wooster will make its 2011 North Coast Athletic Conference debut on Thursday when Oberlin College (7-9, 0-0 NCAC) visits for a 4:30 p.m. contest.
