The College of Wooster women's tennis team closed out the fall portion of its 2012-13 schedule on Tuesday afternoon by easing past Heidelberg University 5-4, which gave the youthful Fighting Scots their initial win of the season.
Wooster (1-2) jumped out to a 2-1 lead during the doubles portion. Freshman Catherine Christian and sophomore Melanie Chin teamed for an 8-3 victory at the top position, while sophomore Rachel Dietz and senior Lauren Gilliss got past their foes at No. 2 by an 8-4 count.
In singles, Christian nearly swept her opponent, yielding just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1, while Gilliss was equally dominant at the sixth spot, where she prevailed 6-0, 6-1. Clinching the match was Chin via a 6-4, 6-0 triumph at the No. 4 position.
One singles match went the distance, with Scot first-year Kimberly Carter dropping a tough 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8) decision at No. 5. They played a super tiebreaker for the third set since the team outcome had already been determined.
The Scots resume their season in February when they'll play a home match inside the Scot Center against Otterbein University.
