The College of Wooster women's tennis team captured the top two singles matches but that was all they could get on Saturday as they fell to Wittenberg University 7-2.
Playing indoors at the Aspen Racquet Club, the Scots found themselves in a 3-0 hole after doubles play. The No. 2 team of Qingyue Li and Meklit Minassie made the Tigers fight for the final point, however, but they came up just short 8-7 (9-7).
The No. 1 team of Sarah Duran and Laura Haley fell 8-4, and the No. 3 team of Emma Saxton and Kendra Devereux lost 8-2.
Li regrouped after her tough doubles outing with a 6-4, 6-3 win in the No. 1 singles slot against Carli Milano. Li, ranked 21st regionally, is now 10-0 this season in singles action at the No. 1 position.
Li has 40 singles wins and 31 wins in the No. 1 position for her career. She also has totaled 77 career wins in singles and doubles play to reach ninth on the all-time program record list.
Duran won 6-3, 6-0 against Sarah Gallup in the No. 2 flight.
Elsewhere in the match, Haley fell 7-5, 6-4 in the No. 3 spot, and Devereux lost 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 4 flight.
Minassie at No. 5 and Saxton at No. 6 each went down in three sets. Minassie took the first set but couldn't keep up the pace in a 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 defeat. Saxton battled back in the second set but could not complete the comeback in a 7-6 (8-6), 2-6, 6-4 loss.
Wittenberg moves to 7-3 with the win while Wooster drops to 8-3. The Scots will open up division play in their next match at Oberlin College on Friday.
