The College of Wooster women's tennis team started strong, taking two of the three doubles points, yet Allegheny College rallied with a strong showing in singles to turn away the Fighting Scots 6-3 on Sunday afternoon at the Tennis Courts at Robertson in Meadville, Pennsylvania.
Senior Sarah Duran and junior Emma Saxton put the Scots (0-6, 0-4 North Coast Athletic Conference East Division) on the board and tied the match at one with an 8-5 decision over Allegheny's (2-1, 2-0 NCAC East Division) Katherine Stancil and Allison Riley in the third flight. At No. 2, senior Laura Haley and first-year Kimberly Nguyen won 8-5 over Ella Swan and Jean-Arlette Legrand, and that point gave Wooster a 2-1 edge heading into singles.
Nguyen scored the Scots' point in singles, turning away Legrand 6-1, 5-7, 1-0 (7) at No. 4 for her first collegiate singles win.
At No. 1, first-year Otilia Oita took set two off Katherine Marks in a tiebreaker, while the Gators' anchor won the third-set tiebreaker to take the match 6-4, 6-7 (6), 1-0 (5). Duran and senior Kendra Devereux won four games in second set the second and sixth flights, respectively. Gaby DeLeon topped Duran 6-1, 6-4, while Noelle Kidd held off Devereux's strong finish to win 6-1, 6-4.
Swan topped Haley 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3, with Stancil winning versus Saxton 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5. Oita and sophomore Abby Kushner Benson fell 8-2 at No. 1 doubles.
Next, Wooster's at Kenyon College (1-0, 1-0 NCAC East Division) for a noon contest on Saturday, April 17.
