Close Doubles Matches Difference in NCAC Opener

The College of Wooster women's tennis team and Oberlin College met on Friday for a matchup in the North Coast Athletic Conference East Division.

Oberlin, ranked 14th in the central region, ended up downing the Scots 6-3 as play moved to Aspen Racquet Club due to the weather.

Wooster fell in an unfortunate 3-0 hole early where each doubles flight ended at 8-7 and went to a tiebreaker.

The No. 1 team of Otilia Oita and Janaki Jagannathan and the No. 2 team of Cherry Patlolla and Kim Nguyen fell 7-2 in their tiebreakers. The No. 3 team of Katie Materick and Abby Kushner Benson took a 7-5 loss in their tiebreaker.

Oberlin went up 5-0 with the conclusion of the first two singles flights. Oita fell 6-0, 6-2 to Marta Laska, who is ranked 21st in the region. Patlolla fell 6-2, 6-4.

Jagannathan then gave Wooster its first win with a 7-6 (0), 3-2 win after a retirement.

Nguyen kept it rolling with a 6-3, 6-3 win at the No. 4 flight. 

Abby Aitken then took a loss at No. 6 against Francesca Kern 6-3, 7-5. Finally, Materick wrapped the match with a win 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 5 flight.

Oberlin moved to 7-6, while Wooster dropped to 8-7. Wooster will be back in action Sunday when they host Wittenberg University.
