Short-Handed Scots Downed in NCAC Quarterfinal

Cherry Patolla GAMBIER – The College of Wooster women's tennis team fell to DePauw University 5-2 in the quarterfinals of the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament on Friday.

Wooster (11-9) competed with just five student-athletes, as DePauw (7-12) won by default in the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles flights. Needing just five points to advance, it put Wooster in an already difficult position.

The teams split between the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles flights as Otilia Oita and Janaki Jagannathan won 8-7 (2) at the No. 1 spot. Cherry Patlolla and Abby Kushner Benson lost 8-5.

Jagannathan got one back for Wooster to begin singles play. She defeated Kiley Shaw in the No. 3 flight 6-2, 6-1.

DePauw collected its fourth point at the No. 5 flight as Kate Stanley defeated Wooster sophomore Abi Geremew 6-0, 6-1. Finally, Lindsay Parks defeated Abby Kushner Benson 7-5, 6-0 at the No. 4 flight.

Before play finished, Patlolla led in the No. 2 flight 6-4, 2-6, 3-2. Oita was in a battle; she won the second set but trailed 6-3, 3-6, 5-4.

Wooster won the previous meeting between the two teams 6-3 back in February.

Now, the Scots will prepare for the fifth-place match at 1:30 p.m. Saturday against Wittenberg University. Wittenberg fell 5-2 to Oberlin College in their quarterfinal match.
