Wooster Turns Away Mount Union, 5-2, in Spring Opener
Jagannathan now at 90 collegiate wins
WOOSTER, Ohio – First-year Jade Adkins' first collegiate singles match was the clincher for The College of Wooster women's tennis team in its 5-2 win over the University of Mount Union on Saturday afternoon at Aspen Racquet Club.
Adkins turned away Mount Union's (1-4) Emily Borchert 6-2, 6-2 in the fourth flight for the decisive fourth match point for Wooster (1-0). Earlier, first-year Stephanie Murarus won 6-1, 6-4 over Emily Peel at No. 2.
Janaki Jagannathan's 6-2, 7-5 win over Mount Union's Amelia Francisco at first singles marked the 90th collegiate victory for the Fighting Scots' senior. Jagannathan teamed with first-year Elyse Errington for a 6-2 win over Francisco and Peel at first doubles to start the match.
Wooster captured the doubles point, thanks to wins in the first two flights. At No. 2, Murarus and junior Sarah Mashaal went 6-4 over Borchert and Jillian Lohnes. Wooster's final point came from first-year Kamila Kadirova, whose collegiate debut was a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Marianna Farmakidis at sixth singles.
Elsewhere, Adkins and sophomore Naledi Jani lost 6-2 at third doubles, Errington was upended by Lohnes 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 singles and Jani fell 6-1, 6-0 at fifth singles.
Next, Wooster hosts Baldwin Wallace University (0-6) at 11 a.m. on Sunday, February 9 at Aspen Racquet Club.
