Scots Fall to 'Berg 3-0

WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster volleyball team started the 2010 season by building a quick lead over Heidelberg University, but a comeback win by the 'Berg in the opening set slowed the Scots momentum, and eventually led to a loss (22-25, 15-25, 16-25) in straight sets at a muggy Timken Gymnasium.

The Scots (0-1) got into a rhythm early on, including contributions from newcomer Paige Parker, who smashed down a kill that gave Wooster a 9-4 lead. Heidelberg (1-0) then went on its own run to tie the score 9-9, and the two teams remained deadlocked up to 17-17, until the 'Berg slowly began to pull away. Sarah Hawke and Parker delivered kills late in the set that almost rallied the Scots, but Heidelberg held on in winning 25-22.

Wooster then struggled to stop Heidelberg's aggressive attack in the remaining sets, but it did show poise in the third, coming back from a six-point deficit (8-2) to get within one on two occasions (12-11, 13-12).

Parker led the Scots statistically with seven kills, 11 digs, and a solo block in her collegiate debut. Erin Webster added five kills, 11 digs, and a service ace, while Lizzi Beal dished out a team-high 16 assists.

Next on the schedule for Wooster is the Ohio Northern Invitational at Ada, Ohio on Sept. 3-4.
