Wooster Starts Strong, Then Falls 3-1 to Case Western Reserve

WOOSTER, Ohio - The College of Wooster got off to a blistering start in the opening set, but Case Western Reserve University withstood the onslaught and upended the Fighting Scots 3-1 (11-25, 25-19, 25-15, 25-18) Tuesday evening at Timken Gymnasium.

The Scots (8-7) were clicking in the early goings, as the team posted a .500 hitting percentage (14 kills, 1 error) in the opening set, which didn't allow the Spartans (11-3) a chance to get into a rhythm. Paige Parker smashed down five of her career-high 15 kills in the set, while Lizzi Beal dished out 12 assists.

The momentum quickly shifted in the second frame, as Case Western Reserve built a 15-6 lead and never looked back. Wooster trailed by as much as 11 points (19-8) in the third set, but were able to get as close as seven down before succumbing 25-15. In the final set it, the Spartans again gave themselves a double-digit cushion (19-9) that Wooster could not cut into.

Parker's 15 kills led the way for Wooster, while Erin Webster added 10, and Melissa Morgan chipped in eight. Beal finished with 37 assists and 14 digs.

This weekend the Scots will begin the North Coast Athletic Conference portion of their schedule, as they travel to Hiram, Ohio for an NCAC Play Date consisting of four matches on Sept. 25-26.
