Wooster Edges JCU 3-1 Behind Parker's 20 Kills

<a href=Paige Parker" width="120" height="170"> WOOSTER, Ohio – Only a couple of points separated The College of Wooster and John Carroll University in each of the four sets they played Tuesday evening, but the Fighting Scots pulled out a 3-1 (25-20, 22-25, 25-22, 25-21) victory at Timken Gymnasium, and in the process, got back above .500 in the standings.

Following three closely contested sets, the Scots (11-10) built the biggest lead of the match by either team in the fourth set, a 19-12 advantage that had the Blue Streaks (13-9) reeling. John Carroll then went on a 7-1 run to pull within 20-19, but Wooster finished strong behind a series of Kelley Johnson serves, and an emphatic Erin Webster kill that ended the set and the match.

Wooster slowly pulled away to win the first set, but the second set was too close to call, as the score was tied on nine occasions, including at 16-16. It was then that John Carroll went on a run to take a 21-16 lead, but later a Zoe Zwegat kill and a service ace by Lizzi Beal had the Scots within one (22-21). The Blue Streaks held on to take the set and tie the match 1-1, but Wooster was able to close out the match by winning back-to-back sets.

The third set was also a back-and-forth affair, and the combination of Autumn Berry and Erica Skillman was key for Wooster throughout. Beal served three-consecutive points in the closing moments, and Melissa Morgan smashed down the kill that won the set 25-22.

Paige Parker was a major factor, as the first-year contributed a career-high 20 kills and added 15 digs to lead the Scots statistically. Webster had seven kills and 18 digs, while Berry dished out a team-high 22 assists.

Wooster will be back on the court Friday evening when it hosts Oberlin College (2-16, 1-4 NCAC) in North Coast Athletic Conference action.
