Wooster Starts Season Strong at Green Hornet Invitational

The College of Wooster volleyball team got their 2011 season started on a high note Friday evening, as the Fighting Scots took down North Park University and Anderson University in day one action at the Green Hornet Invitational at Kalamazoo, Mich.

The Scots (2-0) jumped out to early leads against North Park in sets one and two, and eventually won the match 3-1 (25-16, 25-14, 16-25, 25-16) behind Erica Skillman and her team-high 12 kills. Melissa Morgan added seven kills and 12 digs, and Kelley Johnson led the defensive efforts with 20 digs.

Then against Anderson, the Scots came from behind to win the first set 25-22, and took the second and third sets more decisively by scores of 25-21 and 25-18, respectively. As a team, Wooster recorded a .324 hitting percentage, which included efficient offensive production from Skillman (12 kills, 2 errors) and Paige Parker (10 kills, 1 error). Lizzi Beal had 25 assists, while fellow setter Autumn Berry dished out 17 of her own.

Wooster will play two more matches at the Green Hornet Invitational tomorrow, with Franklin College at noon and then Kalamazoo College shortly after.
