Balanced Contributions Propel Wooster Past Oberlin

Led by senior Ksenia Klue's co-match-high 13 kills, The College of Wooster volleyball team featured a balanced offense as four student-athletes logged at least nine kills during the Fighting Scots' key North Coast Athletic Conference four-set (25-19, 24-26, 25-13, 25-22) win over Oberlin College as Philips Gym on Saturday afternoon.

Wooster (12-9, 1-2 NCAC), opened the match with a .355 attack percentage in the first set, as the Scots had 13 kills on 31 swings with only two errors. Wooster utilized a 7-1 run to open up a 12-5 lead with the Scots depth on full display with kills by four different players during the run. Junior Ashley Plassard and sophomore Erica Roberts led the charge up front with a combined seven kills on 10 swings with no errors.

Klue heated up in the second set as that's when the senior logged six of her kills, including one on set point to tie the frame at 24. A few points prior, Klue gave Wooster a one-point lead at 22-21, and that was bumped out to a two-point edge on an Oberlin (9-9, 0-4 NCAC) attack error. However, back-to-back kills by Sara Chang and Jaya Flynn-Young tied the match at one set each.

Wooster roared back in the third set with an attack clip above .300. The Scots benefitted early from another 7-1 run, this time to open up an 11-4 lead after an Oberlin attack error. Junior Marija Cyvas stepped up in the run with three of her 10 kills. Other key notes from the third set including eight digs by junior Gabrielle Basinski and four kills each by sophomore Kyana Harris and Plassard.

In the fourth set, an 8-0 run by Wooster proved to be the difference as that's when the Scots took the lead for good. Back-to-back kills from senior Taylor Mathews gave the Scots the lead at 14-13, and Plassard followed suit with two straight kills.

Speaking of Plassard, the junior was the third Scot in double figures in kills for the match with 11. Plassard hit a red-hot .478 for the match, and in fact, combined with Cyvas, accounted for 21 kills on 42 swings with no blemishes in the attack error column of the stat sheet.

Klue backed up her 13 kills with 10 digs for a double-double, a feat that was matched by Mathews courtesy of 38 assists and 10 digs.

Basinski led the way defensively with a match-high 23 digs.

Oberlin was paced by Claudia Scott's 13 kills and Maura Gibbs' 18 digs.

Next, Wooster hosts a twin bill on Wednesday evening with a 5:30 p.m. match versus the University of Akron Wayne College (2-4) followed by a 7 p.m. tilt versus Allegheny College (11-8, 0-2 NCAC).
