Wooster Drops Friday Evening NCAC Tilt at Hiram

Erica Roberts

Seniors Taylor Mathews and Ksenia Klue recorded their 15th and 12th double-doubles of the year respectively, but The College of Wooster volleyball team couldn't overcome a .202 attack percentage by host Hiram College during the Terriers' 25-21, 18-25, 25-17, 25-16 win on Friday evening at Price Gymnasium in Hiram, Ohio.

Five early kills by Klue helped Wooster (14-10, 2-3 North Coast Athletic Conference) open up a five-point lead at 13-8 in the opening frame. In fact, Wooster extended its lead out to six at 14-8 after sophomore Erica Roberts' third kill in the frame. Later, a 7-0 Hiram (14-8, 2-4 NCAC) run pushed the Terriers on top at 20-18, and Hiram later had a 3-1 burst to close out the opening set.

In the second set, Wooster opened up a 15-8 lead, thanks to a 12-1 run. Klue started the run with a kill and an ace, and Wooster had two blocks with junior Eleri Miller in on both of them. Later, Hiram pulled within five at 20-15, but logged back-to-back attack errors that were followed up by a Miller kill to push Wooster's edge back out to eight before a block by Miller and junior Ashley Plassard, and a Roberts kill tied the match up at one set each.

Hiram led wire-to-wire in the third set, but Wooster did have some bright spots, most notably thee kills each from junior Marija Cyvas and Miller in the frame and six digs by classmate Gabrielle Basinski. In fact, Wooster outscored Hiram 7-5 down the stretch, but couldn't mount a lengthy run earlier in the frame to aid in a potential comeback bid.

An early 6-1 run by the Terriers in the fourth set proved to be one of the keys in the frame, although Klue logged nine of her 18 digs in the stanza to give the Scots plenty of chances at the net. Roberts converted on a team-high three kills in the frame while Cyvas and Klue had two each.

For the match, Klue tallied a team-high 13 kills and backed that up with 18 digs while Mathews was one behind Klue in the dig column. The Scots' setter dished out 34 assists in the match. Defensively, Basinski recorded a team-high 23 digs and moved past alumna Beth Moore for sixth on the program's all-time leaderboard.

Kiara Franks led Hiram with a match-high 16 kills, and she was one of four to log over 10 digs for the Terriers. Lindsey Walker, who had 31 digs and 20 assists, finished one kill shy of a triple-double.

Next, Wooster hosts Kenyon (12-8, 2-2 NCAC) at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
