Scot Rewind: Wooster's 8-0 Start in 2015
Opening stretch was the best mark for the Scots since 1969
Welcome back to the Scot Rewind, where WoosterAthletics.com is taking a look back at a big win, a monster individual performance, or a significant milestone corresponding with each week of the 2020-2021 academic year. This week, we look back at The College of Wooster volleyball team's 8-0 start to the 2015 season. Here's the highlights from the program's best start since 1969.
The 2015 season marked the 50th year of varsity volleyball at the College, and Wooster certainly didn't disappoint at the year's onset, with eight straight victories, marking the best start to a season since the Fighting Scots posted a perfect 11-0 ledger in 1969.
Wooster's season opened with a 25-19, 28-26, 25-8 sweep over Thiel College, in what marked the program's first lid-lifter win since 2011, and the first season-opening sweep in a decade. The Scots left no doubt in the third set by racing out of the gate with an 8-0 run, and a 7-0 spurt later in the frame staked Wooster to an 18-4 advantage. The eight points allowed were the fewest in a non-fifth set frame since Kenyon College mustered seven on October 4, 2008.
Four more wins followed at Saint Vincent College's Bearcat Challenge, where Wooster capped the weekend with a 17-25, 25-19, 19-25, 25-19, 15-8 win over Frostburg State University. Alumna Savannah Moore logged two triple-doubles on the weekend with 15 assists, 12 digs, and 10 kills during an 11-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-21 victory over Muskingum University and 16 digs, 13 assists, and 11 kills versus Frostburg. Moore's triple-double against the Fighting Muskies was the program's first since Lizzi Beal in 2011.
Next, Wooster swept aside Wilmington College 25-21, 25-18, 25-18, for its sixth straight victory, marking the program's longest winning streak since 2010. Alumnae Anna Emmick and Ksenia Klue combined for 16 kills on 40 swings with just one error, and as a team, the Scots hit a season-best .319.
Wooster's 12-25, 25-18, 25-17, 25-16 win over Ohio Christian University on September 12 officially marked the Scots' best start since 1969, and the program went on to open up its Ginny Hunt Kilt Classic with a 25-18, 25-23, 27-25 win over Capital University before suffering its first setback of the season against Albion College.
Moore and alumna Lydia Webster combined for 5.25 kills per set during the 8-0 start, while three other Scots – Emmick, Klue, and alumna Megan Mey – averaged over 1.50 kills per set. The Scots were equally as impressive at the net defensively with 1.79 blocks per set during the winning streak, with Emmick averaging nearly one per set. Alumna Gabrielle Basinski's 5.31 digs per set paced the back row.
